East Lancashire Road

East Lancashire Road, 1929The East Lancashire Road runs from Walton Hall Avenue through to Salford and Manchester. It was the second major road building in Liverpool - after the building of Queens Drive in 1927, which was also proposed by Liverpool's City Engineer, John Alexander Brodie. The road runs for just over twenty six miles to the manufacturing towns of south Lancashire, It was given the name East Lancashire road, or East Lancs for short, because the original intention was to extend the road from Manchester through to the east of the county - a forerunner of the M62.

The first section of the road was opened on the 29 April 1929, by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool. The whole road was completed four years later and was officially opened by King George V on 18 July 1934 on his way to the opening of the new Mersey Road Tunnel.
